Quiberon Bay breaks up the French fleet

Flooded gunports, shoals, darkness, and escape attempts fragmented Conflans’s fleet and removed it as an effective invasion instrument.

Notes

Thésée capsized after turning sharply with her lower gunports open, leaving only twenty-two survivors. Superbe also went down, and Héros grounded after surrendering. When Hawke tried to attack Soleil Royal in Royal George, Intrépide placed herself between the flagships and took the fire. Conflans nevertheless fell to leeward and anchored away from his fleet, losing effective command. After dark, eight French ships escaped through the shoals independently, while another group jettisoned guns and gear to enter the Vilaine and remained trapped long afterward. Other ships were wrecked or burned, including Soleil Royal and Héros. Britain lost two wrecked ships of the line, while six French ships were destroyed and one captured.
