When did boarding cease to be a broadly viable naval tactic?
Short answerIt lingered into the world wars in special circumstances, but speed and automatic weapons made close boarding increasingly impractical.
NotesBoarding did not vanish on a single date and still occurred in exceptional twentieth-century operations. Faster ships and machine guns nevertheless made it increasingly dangerous to close, come alongside, and put a boarding party across under fire. Age-of-sail tactics could exchange several broadsides and then use smoke and low relative speed to create a boarding opportunity. Modern navies still train specialized teams for boarding, but those controlled missions are different from the routine fleet-combat method seen in the seventeenth century.
