Were the Dido-class cruisers designed with radar in mind?
Short answerYes in the sense of future fitting: no mature set was available at ordering, but the ships were arranged for rapid radar installation before the planned 1942 fleet peak.
NotesRadar remained under development when the class was ordered in 1937. The intention was to take ships out of service briefly, install the maturing equipment, and return them to the fleet. Royal Navy planning concentrated on maximum strength from 1942 onward. Some early wartime availability problems followed from construction and modernization schedules aimed at that later date.
