Did the British warships fire back at the battery on Yamacraw Bluff?
Short answerProbably, but the bluff’s height may have exceeded the useful elevation of their guns and made the return fire ineffective.
NotesThe militia’s light guns were far weaker than the warships’ heaviest pieces, but position could outweigh nominal gun power. Yamacraw Bluff placed the battery above the vessels rather than level with them. Shipboard mountings may not have elevated sufficiently to answer the high target accurately. The exchange therefore shows how river terrain can deny a warship the apparent advantage shown by its armament list.
