What capabilities would a 30,000-ton Invincible-class carrier gain?
Short answerThe larger ship could be around thirty metres longer, carry far more aircraft, offer a longer takeoff run, and possibly use deck-edge lifts that preserve valuable hangar volume.
NotesIncreasing Invincible from roughly 22,000 to 30,000 tons moves the design closer to the original Audacious-class scale. A hull around 230 to 240 metres long would give aircraft more deck run and more internal volume. Deck-edge lifts could free additional hangar space that historical centreline lifts consumed. The resulting carrier might embark an air group on the order of thirty-six Sea Harriers plus twenty-four Sea Kings, a major increase in British carrier capability and a much stronger force for a Falklands-type campaign.
