Could Soviet trade replace Japan's Western supplies?

Soviet trade could not provide much more after Barbarossa than Japan already received under its existing agreement.

Question

Could Japan turn to the Soviet Union for more raw materials and manufactured goods?

Short answer

Only to a limited extent; existing trade already captured much of what was available, and Barbarossa sharply constrained further Soviet supply.

Notes

Japan already received some raw materials and manufactured goods from the Soviet Union under its existing arrangements. There was little room to expand that supply after Operation Barbarossa. Soviet economic activity increasingly served the Soviet Union's own wartime requirements. Additional trade offered only limited relief for Japan.
