Why did the Royal Navy not retain the Blackburn Skua longer as a dive bomber?
Short answerBecause the Dauntless and later Helldiver offered better performance once the Navy could obtain them.
NotesThe Skua was not dismissed as useless in its intended dive-bombing role. It represented what British industry could produce while the Navy lacked direct access to the engines and engineering conversations it needed. Once better American aircraft became available, retaining the older design made less sense. Its replacement was a normal capability improvement rather than proof that the original requirement had been foolish.
