Why American yards could not solve every British Pacific repair problem

American repair facilities were available in principle, but British operating geography and the scale of a complete fleet kept Australian capacity and ship survivability central.

Question

Could Royal Navy carriers simply use American Pacific repair yards?

Short answer

Sometimes, but geography and fleet scale made those yards an incomplete answer, leaving Britain dependent on more limited Australian support.

Notes

British ships advancing north from Australia did not automatically sit near the largest American Pacific repair yards. Individual capital ships could be sent across the ocean when the repair justified the journey. Supporting hundreds of carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and auxiliaries was a different logistical problem. Australian yards were valuable but were not built to absorb every demand of a fleet on that scale.
