Was the Constellation class really a replacement for the Perry class?
Short answerIn fleet numbers it followed the Perry need, but in independent capability it was closer to a modern Knox because far less supporting cover was available.
NotesKnox and Perry operated alongside one another, with Knox better suited to picket work and Perry supplying numbers. Constellation had to address the gap left by both classes. It needed Perry-like fleet numbers with something closer to Knox's independent capabilities. Reduced supporting coverage could require greater self-protection than either older frigate had.
