Would the British numbered type system for escorts still emerge if war were delayed?
Short answerProbably not by 1950; traditional class names would remain sufficient until a later alliance created a need for standardization.
NotesThe postwar British type system grew partly from alliance standardization and therefore would not necessarily appear on the historical schedule. Existing navies already understand terms such as corvette, frigate, sloop, escort destroyer, destroyer leader, and light or heavy cruiser. Those names can continue while ship roles evolve beneath them. A numbered system remains possible later if a formal multinational organization needs common designations.
