Would cruisers still be classified as heavy or light, or would new classifications appear?
Short answerHeavy and light probably remain useful labels, but battlecruiser could shift downward to describe the largest cruiser types.
NotesFamiliar heavy and light cruiser labels probably survive because navies understand their gun-caliber distinction. The boundary becomes less tidy once automatic 8- or 9.2-inch weapons and Alaska-like 12-inch ships enter service. A large cruiser might eventually inherit the battlecruiser name after that term stops describing the fastest capital ships. Classification therefore follows institutional habit and relative fleet position rather than a single permanent technical definition.
