Could an early AA cruiser simply be upgunned?

Replacing light high-angle mounts with much heavier 5.25-inch turrets was a structural redesign problem, not a routine wartime refit.

Question

Could a lightly armed early anti-aircraft cruiser be upgunned when better weapons became available?

Short answer

Only within tight limits. A hull and mounting position designed for twin 4-inch guns could not simply absorb the much greater weight and structural demands of twin 5.25-inch turrets.

Notes

Mount weight and the ship's supporting structure set hard limits on later up-gunning. A position strong enough for a single 6-inch gun might accept a twin 4-inch mount. A position built for the lighter twin 4-inch mounting could not simply carry a twin 5.25-inch turret, which imposed much greater weight. An early ship could therefore become trapped by the armament choice that allowed it to enter service sooner.
