How does the modern Controller of the Royal Navy compare with the historic Third Sea Lord?
Short answerThe work remains broadly similar; restoring the older title is proposed as a way to give the Controller more standing in institutional discussions.
NotesThe Controller of the Royal Navy continues much of the work formerly associated with the Third Sea Lord. The additional title ceased to be used after 1965 in this account. Restoring it is advocated because the words Sea Lord give the office greater standing when its holder argues the Navy's case. A panelist compares that effect with the authority his master-electrician qualification gives him when dealing with superiors and other departments.
