Phalanx is a more practical containerized defence

A self-contained close-in weapon avoids some of the launcher, sensor, and control burdens that complicate containerized missiles.

Question

Is a containerized 20- or 30-millimetre close-in weapon system more viable than containerized VLS?

Short answer

Yes. Phalanx is already a comparatively self-contained system that can be installed and operated more like a plug-and-play defensive package.

Notes

Phalanx brings its gun, radar, and local fire-control functions together in one established mounting. That integration makes it easier to package than a missile system whose launchers, sensors, command equipment, and power may be spread across several containers. Installation still needs a suitable foundation, firing arcs, power, and crew support. A follow-up distinguishes a Phalanx-derived C-RAM package from RAM arrangements that are less self-contained. The practical advantage is that the core gun system already exists as a coherent local-defence unit rather than a collection of components that must first be networked at sea.
