Would Scapa Flow work as a modern submarine base?
Short answerNot without extensive infrastructure, because the islands remain disconnected from the support and transport networks a submarine base needs.
NotesThe water space is suitable, but the water space alone is not enough. Submarines need maintenance, people, stores, communications, transport, and reliable links to national infrastructure. Ferries cannot substitute for the continuous heavy supply chain of an operational submarine base. Without a new railway, tunnel, bridge, or comparable large-scale construction, the island location leaves Scapa too disconnected for such a role.
