Q&A: Why Aurora returned after neutral internment

A viewer asks how the cruiser Aurora came back to Russia after being interned during the Russo-Japanese War.

Question

How did Russia get Aurora back after she was interned?

Short answer

Neutral powers normally returned interned warships to their owners after the war ended.

Notes

Internment placed a belligerent warship in temporary neutral custody. The neutral state removed the ship from the fighting and held it for the duration of the conflict. Once peace returned, the vessel would normally go back to its owner. Aurora's return followed that ordinary rule of internment.
