A surviving Ark Royal would, in this counterfactual, accompany Prince of Wales and Repulse in Southeast Asia. Two Martlet squadrons were being prepared for her, giving the unescorted Japanese bombers that attacked Force Z a dangerous fighter opponent. Renown could join as an additional fast capital ship. With a carrier, working flagships, and an established staff, Admiral Phillips could concentrate ABDA forces around a much stronger core. Japan would then need to divert substantial fleet units to defeat that concentration, with British radar and night-strike training complicating the attack.
