Q-ships, convoys, escorts, and radio monitoring

The World War I response to U-boats grew from deceptive Q-ships into convoy escort, air reconnaissance, and radio-informed routing.

Notes

Q-ships exploited the submarine's preference for surface gun attacks, but their success encouraged greater reliance on torpedoes. Convoys then concentrated merchant shipping under escort, while aircraft and radio monitoring helped locate threats or route ships around them. Flower-class sloops, minesweepers, and other long-range vessels shifted into open escort work, with local destroyer groups strengthening protection nearer Britain and in the Mediterranean. The result was an increasingly integrated defense rather than a single submarine-killing device.
