Engineer Captain J. C. Brand proposes pulverising coal finely enough for it to flow and be moved through hoses. He gives a net loading rate of 300 tons an hour through one six-inch hose after allowing for intermittent flow. Preliminary burner trials report complete combustion close to the burner and recovery of most of the ash, while proper efficiency measurements remain outstanding. Each marine furnace needs a separate, evenly mixed fuel supply that can vary from 10 to 100 per cent for duties ranging from harbour work to full speed. Flanged joints, dust-free machinery spaces, and ash recovery are part of the proposed installation. Brand argues that sealed bunkers using inert funnel gas would make carriage safe. Coal loaded aboard already pulverised is also presented as more economical than grinding it on the ship.

Turning pulverized coal into a pumpable marine fuel
Pulverised coal was proposed as a fuel that could be loaded through hoses, provided its burners, bunker arrangements, dust control, and variable fuel feeds worked together.
