How published primary sources guide archive research

A documentary compilation can answer a question directly or identify the ADM files and evidentiary gaps that deserve closer archival work.

Notes

John Grehan's documentary account of Operation Iceberg shows the value of books built from Admiralty records. Transcribed ADM material can provide primary evidence without requiring an immediate visit to the National Archives. It can also act as a map by showing which original files, omissions, or lightly footnoted claims should be checked in person. The historian can return to the published volume as a quick reminder while pursuing the fuller archival context. Published documentary collections and original archival research can reinforce one another.
