Why veterans may not recognize or request help

Personal accounts examine reluctance to acknowledge possible symptoms and an analogy that treats outside help as a response to exhausted reserves.

Notes

One participant describes relatives whose behaviour appears to them to show symptoms of PTSD, but who do not accept that interpretation. Changes can become part of how a person now understands themselves, and the participant associates some older relatives' reluctance with a sense of shame. This leaves charities unable to reach some of the people who appear to need support. Alex then recalls his grandfather's analogy of separate accounts for money, physical strength, and stress. In that analogy, exhausting one's capacity for stress is a reason to seek help from other people.
