Height was a selection criterion for Prussian grenadiers, much as exceptional height can steer athletes toward basketball. Frederick the Great and his father both favored tall men for grenadier service. A man who met the standard might have little choice when the Prussian monarchy decided to recruit him. An elite formation's physical ideal could therefore make human stature a military resource.
