Chapter ยท 9:26-13:01

Continuity beneath the Protectorate

Richard Stayner's knighthood illustrates how Cromwell retained familiar honors and institutions while reviving Elizabethan policy.

Notes

Caricatures of the Interregnum can obscure how much of the established English system survived. Titles, knighthoods, officeholders, and familiar methods of reward continued under new political labels. Personnel could move into Restoration offices even when the constitutional vocabulary changed. Captain Richard Stayner's promotion after Cadiz is a concrete example of institutional continuity alongside a renewed Elizabethan-style maritime policy.
