Protection and displacement pressure

Armour thickness, deck protection, machinery, and turret layout rapidly consume the displacement available to a fast battlecruiser.

Notes

The paper ship starts with a ten-inch main belt, five-inch deck armour, and a 30-knot ambition, then exceeds the 28,500-ton limit. A third triple turret makes the balance worse, so the simulation temporarily settles on two. Belt and deck thicknesses are reduced and the hull parameters adjusted until roughly 110 tons remain for secondary weapons. The sequence shows how quickly protection and machinery consume a battlecruiser's displacement. Triple turrets save deck space and some weight, but they do not erase the rest of the ship's costs.
