Protecting subordinates and projecting composure

The Warrior reading leads to practical advice about protecting subordinates, continuing to learn, and remaining composed enough to support others.

Notes

A senior leader should require criticism of immediate subordinates to pass through their own commander. This protects the relationship of responsibility between each leader and the people beneath them. Good commanders also remain willing to learn and encourage their subordinates to learn more. Leadership sometimes requires a deliberate performance of composure, with personal fear acknowledged without allowing it to appear in control. The same expectation applies to senior NCOs: the people depending on them need a reliable presence during difficulty.
