Professional language can lose political support

Military expertise has little political effect when specialists use acronyms and insider language that exclude the officials whose understanding and funding they need.

Notes

An encounter between service officers and a politician required someone to translate the officers' acronyms into ordinary language. Making a decision-maker feel ignorant does not display expertise; it makes the institution smaller and less persuasive. Technical teams need leaders who can explain their work to outsiders and translate outside requirements back to specialists. For navies, communication is part of force advocacy and civil-military leadership rather than an optional public-relations layer.
