A British magnetic mine delayed Prinz Eugen's sortie

Mine damage to fuel storage, shaft couplings, and fire control delayed Prinz Eugen just before Operation Rheinübung and intensified debate over whether to wait for a stronger force.

Notes

Prinz Eugen was selected to accompany Bismarck in Operation Rheinübung, but struck a British air-dropped magnetic mine while passing through the Fehmarn Belt on 23 April 1941. The explosion damaged a fuel tank, propeller-shaft couplings, and fire-control equipment rather than simply scratching the hull. Repairs delayed the sortie and gave Raeder and Günther Lütjens another reason to consider waiting for Scharnhorst or Tirpitz. The episode shows how mine warfare could disrupt an oceanic surface operation before the raiders reached open water. It also connects tactical damage control to the larger force-concentration decision behind the Bismarck sortie.
