German planners considered delaying Operation Rheinübung until another capital ship could join, because a stronger group would impose a much larger response on the Royal Navy. A battleship and one heavy cruiser could be met without exhausting British resources, whereas several capital ships and cruisers would create a much harder concentration problem. After separating from Bismarck, Prinz Eugen reached a tanker with only about a day's fuel remaining and soon developed engine defects that ended her mission. Her later Channel Dash, Baltic service, and survival of the Bikini tests extended the career, but did not erase the sortie's force-structure and logistics lesson.
