Maritime theory prepares judgment

Corbett's Principles of Maritime Strategy presents theory as education for judgment and shared understanding.

Notes

Corbett treats theory as preparation for judgment rather than a formula to carry into battle. War involves personality, rapid decisions, and changing conditions that resist complete scientific analysis. Theoretical study can still broaden a commander's outlook and help identify the factors in an unexpected situation. It also gives subordinates a common understanding of orders and provides officers and ministers with language for explaining a coherent plan of war. Shared concepts reduce misunderstandings, while execution still depends on the human qualities of the people in command.
