Prince Rupert shows the proposed wider 18-inch rearmament

Prince Rupert's uneventful service and possible conversion photograph introduce the Admiralty's late-war idea of giving more Lord Clive-class monitors 18-inch guns.

Notes

Prince Rupert spent the war doing the Dover Squadron's routine patrol and bombardment work without a singularly famous action. The surviving photograph may show her while she was under consideration for an 18-inch conversion. Late in the war the Admiralty looked at extending the heavy-gun arrangement beyond the few ships that actually received it. The wider rearmament remained a proposal, while only a few conversions were completed in time for combat.
