The lost value of preserving USS Portland

USS Portland could have preserved a rare physical example of the transition between treaty-era cruiser concepts.

Notes

Portland survived the war and was the only class member with a realistic chance of preservation. Transitional ships are often missing from museum collections, even though their compromises reveal how navies moved between design categories. A preserved Portland would have made the gap between the formal heavy-cruiser label and the ship's scouting origins physically tangible. Because the hull was scrapped, that transition can no longer be studied through a surviving example.
