Presence frigates as reserve combat capability

Type 31 would give a task group extra escorts, weapons, and naval gunfire support while Type 26 and Type 45 retained their specialist roles.

Notes

The Type 31 can support a task group without replacing Type 26 or Type 45 specialists. Extra missiles, guns, or an additional ship on the inner screen can strengthen layered air defence and anti-submarine protection. The Falklands War illustrates the value of adaptable hulls: Sir Galahad lacked a suitable escort, while the few Type 22 frigates were too scarce and too specialised to cover every need. Their missile system and limited gun armament also made them a poor fit for close work in the bays. A Type 31's all-round gun armament would suit close escort and naval gunfire tasks while preserving specialist ships for the missions they were built to perform.
