Why the pre-dreadnought label remains useful

The transition from ironclads to HMS Dreadnought explains why historians still use the artificial but practical pre-dreadnought category.

Notes

Warships built before HMS Dreadnought did not form a cleanly bounded technical type; they emerged through gradual changes from ironclad frigates and late nineteenth-century battleships. The label nevertheless gives historians a practical dividing line where no single transitional ship exists. The category belongs within a longer sequence of dreadnought, super-dreadnought, and fast battleship eras shaped by changing technology and strategic conditions. Battleships concentrated on defeating other ships, while aircraft carriers could also affect events ashore. The artificial period label clarifies naval development without suggesting that design changed overnight.
