Italian sea power before a unified Italy

Before Italian unification, Venice, Naples and Sicily, the Papal States, and other regional powers maintained their own maritime forces.

Notes

Referring to an Italian navy before Italy existed can hide the political map that produced ships. Venice, Naples and Sicily, the Papal States, Florence, and Milan had maritime forces of widely varying strength. Age-of-sail history therefore needs the names of contemporary states rather than later national labels.
