Amphibious task groups, battlecruiser forces, and wargaming all show how major wartime capabilities depend on advance thought and practice. Major formations cannot be assembled effectively in crisis if commanders have never thought through how their parts should work together. The problem grows as reserve personnel take on more roles: regulars and reservists must be able to integrate in hours rather than after weeks of training. Flexible, possibly online, wargaming could maintain that shared readiness around participants' civilian schedules.
