Audacity's loss showed the danger of allowing a carrier to detach alone whenever it needed to turn into the wind: a snowflake flare illuminated her after she had separated from the convoy. Fleet-carrier doctrine already kept the fleet with a carrier during flying maneuvers, and PQ 18 adapted that principle to convoy speed and formation. Avenger received an operating box at the convoy's stern, with destroyers assigned to accompany any larger maneuver away from the formation. Submarines travelling on the surface within the convoy provided a sting against German surface raiders, while anti-aircraft ships, oilers, and merchant columns were arranged around the expected southern approach. When an air raid threatened, Avenger could move into one of two protected positions, preferably on the safer northern side. The formation shows that integrating a carrier required reorganizing the convoy around its wind, speed, and protection needs rather than simply adding a flight deck to the escort list.

PQ 18 integrates an escort carrier into the convoy
After Audacity's loss, PQ 18 used protected operating positions, destroyer support, submarines, and threat-oriented formation changes to keep Avenger close to the convoy.
