Other navies could display striking new technology during the 1950s. Britain fielded the Daring-class destroyer, France sent the modernized battleship Jean Bart abroad, and the United States introduced the Forrestal-class carrier and the nuclear-powered Nautilus. The Soviet Union still lacked an operational carrier, a modern battleship of its own, or the first nuclear submarine. That mattered because Soviet diplomacy presented the state as a model of modern technological progress. Useful submarines and cruisers did not project the image of a navy leading technical development. Appearance and international status consequently became design requirements alongside combat performance.
