Why postwar battleship construction stopped

The end of new battleship programmes reflected the postwar enemy and mission set as well as the rise of carrier aviation.

Notes

Postwar capital-ship construction ended after HMS Vanguard and the Iowa class partly because the likely enemy had changed. The Soviet Union did not field a battle fleet of modern battleships or battlecruisers that demanded an equivalent ship-killing answer. Against an enemy surface force of that kind, the battleship still offered formidable destructive power for its weight. This strategic context cautions against treating naval technology as a simple contest in which one platform automatically replaces another.
