The class began adapting to air attack soon after the First World War. Its original 76.2-millimeter battery was reduced slightly, while six additional guns of the same caliber were installed in an anti-aircraft role. Two-pounder, or 40-millimeter, weapons also appeared on the forecastle deck. This incremental refit provides a useful contrast with the wholesale 1933-1937 reconstruction that later transformed Giulio Cesare.
