After Mobile Bay, Farragut strongly supported awards for deserving sailors, and twelve Hartford crewmen received Medals of Honor. As Hartford underwent repair, he shifted toward high-level coordination. Promotion to vice admiral in 1864 and full admiral in 1866 made him the service's senior figure. His final major command took the new USS Franklin to Europe, where the squadron signaled that the United States had survived civil war and remained a naval power. Farragut remained on active duty for life and died in 1870, closing a career that had begun before the War of 1812.
