Weapons development did not stop with Rome

The label Dark Ages does not mean European weapons froze at Roman levels, as later axes, swords, spears, and archery continued to develop.

Notes

Weapons development continued after Roman rule ended. In this comparison, a Viking axe is preferable to the axes available in the Roman period. The quality of Saxon swords and spears, together with improvements in archery, supplies further examples of continued change. Political disruption therefore does not imply that all military technology stopped developing.
