Design practice had moved away from many unstable three-deck arrangements toward powerful two-deck line ships. Main batteries increasingly concentrated on 24- and 32-pounder guns, with 68-pounder carronades available on the upper works. Some hulls remained veterans or descendants of Napoleonic-era designs, including the Canopus lineage represented by HMS Asia and the former French HMS Genoa. Navarino therefore combined familiar sailing-warship forms with heavier and more standardized close-range firepower.
