How would you recommend visiting the naval museums at Portsmouth?
Short answerAllow three to four nights and at least two substantial museum days so the dockyard, ships, Gosport sites, and forts are not rushed.
NotesA three- or four-night visit is the recommendation made in this episode, with up to two days for the main historic dockyard. HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, and the Mary Rose compete for time with the monitor, museum collections, Gosport sites, and surrounding forts. Steve recalls spending so long in the Mary Rose Museum that his party missed the last boat back to the submarine museum and needed a taxi. His visits included HMS Alliance, but still left sites unseen. That experience explains the advice to allow several days, especially when returning soon would be difficult.
