USS Portland's career belongs in the broader history of the Pacific War. She screened Yorktown at Coral Sea and Midway, rescued Lexington survivors, and then supported Enterprise during the opening Guadalcanal operations. A torpedo hit at Guadalcanal forced repairs first at Sydney and then at San Diego. After returning to service, Portland participated in most of the major Pacific operations from 1943 onward and earned sixteen battle stars.
