Porter's victory over Alert and the risks of glory-seeking command

The capture of the lightly armed Alert and Porter's earlier combat experience help distinguish personal courage from sound command judgment.

Notes

Essex vastly outgunned Alert, a converted collier carrying a much lighter battery. The capture demonstrated success against a lightly armed opponent without proving that Essex could defeat a peer frigate. Porter had earlier combat experience in the Quasi-War, including action against L'Insurgente, and considerable personal courage. His image of himself as a dashing hero nevertheless raised a command problem: a pursuit of public glory could expose the crew to risks that did not serve the mission.
