Portchester Castle was launched at Swan Hunter in June 1943. In the service account given here, she shared the sinking of U-484 with Helmsdale in September 1944. She later joined the 30th Escort Group under Dennis Rayner and took part in the attack on U-1200. Four Castle-class ships pursued that submarine on 11 November 1944 as it approached the Channel. They repeatedly straddled it with Squid and depth-charge attacks until it sank. The action illustrates the sustained pressure a coordinated escort group could apply to one submarine.
