Political balance and a crusader command network

Edward's political method combines listening to magnates, raising alternative power centers, and turning the Ninth Crusade into a loyal military network.

Notes

Edward's strength rests on political balance rather than simple repression. The king listens to noble grievances while reducing the ability of any one group to dominate the country. Instead of pulling successful subjects down, he encourages new people and middling ranks to acquire influence, creating alternative sources of support. Stability is the intended result because dependence on one overmighty class would invite either plotting or revolt. The Ninth Crusade also serves a domestic purpose in this interpretation: soldiers leave England, fight under Edward's personal command, and learn to follow him. When they return, he possesses a tested core of loyal men on whom he can rely in later conflicts.
