Polish naval ranks resist simple English translations

Polish naval titles distinguish an officer's rank from command of a ship, so a literal English translation of captain can overstate seniority.

Notes

Polish naval ranks do not map neatly onto English titles. Kapitan marynarki is explained here as a senior-lieutenant grade, although a literal translation can make it sound equivalent to a Royal Navy captain. The commander grades cover higher levels before the admiral ranks. Destroyers and submarines had small crews, and officers of comparatively modest rank could command them. A ship's captain and an officer holding captain's rank therefore need to be distinguished.
