Poland builds a Baltic light surface force

Polish destroyers combined convoy protection, offensive sweeps, and enough speed to choose engagements within the confined Baltic.

Notes

Poland needed ships powerful enough to protect convoys and conduct offensive sweeps without the infrastructure required by a large fleet. The intended light surface group resembled the Royal Navy's Force K: a compact formation able to act independently against local threats. The French-derived Wicher class devoted more hull volume to machinery for high speed, while the British-derived Grom class achieved a more efficient balance of speed and firepower. Speed helped the Polish ships choose engagements, and destroyer size preserved maneuvering room in confined Baltic waters. The principal weakness was scale, because four ships could not provide much operational depth against Germany and the Soviet Union.
