From Winchelsea to the Treaty of Brétigny

De la Cerda survives, but later English victories at Poitiers help secure territorial gains in the Treaty of Brétigny.

Notes

Making de la Cerda constable of France drew him away from independent maritime operations. Six years later the Black Prince's campaign culminated at Poitiers, and the Treaty of Brétigny closed the first phase of the war. The settlement left England with enlarged holdings and confirmed the strategic value of Edward's combined military and maritime pressure. Winchelsea belongs inside that wider sequence because keeping the Channel usable helped England continue projecting force into France.
